Photo of Ben OrtizWith training in literature at Stanford and Loyola Universities, student-newspaper adviser and journalism professor Benjamin Ortiz learned how to write for a public audience in the alternative-weekly newspaper industry, at Chicago’s NewCity and the Reader. Experienced as an editor, communications director, and press agent, Ortiz has taught at Truman since 2004. He currently writes features and reviews for the Chicago Tribune. Ortiz also has performed a weekly news round-up and talk-show interview through Chicago’s Vocalo public-radio station, and he served on the editorial board of The Common Review, the magazine of the Great Books Foundation. With interests in cultural history and literary journalism, his articles have covered Mayan doomsday prophecies, the White Sox World Series championship, and local Latino rock. In spring 2010, the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma awarded professor Ortiz with their inaugural Academic Fellowship, a training program at Columbia University in New York.
